Day Sixteen

“Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.” Romans 8:5

When I was sixteen I got behind the wheel of my parent’s Chrysler Town and Country and headed to the grocery for milk and vanilla. It was the first time I was alone, behind the wheel and I remember feeling a great deal of freedom and power. I was driving. I was in control. There was no one telling me how to drive, which direction to turn or how to get to where we were headed. I had control. I determined which path I took and the final destination.

The dictionary defines the word “govern” as “to exercise continuous sovereignty over; to exert a determining or guiding influence over”. Romans 8 reminds us that having a mind governed by the Spirit (under the influence of the Spirit) leads us to know life and peace! In a sense you wake up every day and determine who is going to be “behind the wheel” in your mind. Our default is to set ourselves in the driver’s seat. When we determine to let the Lord “govern” our minds and our lives, we know life and peace. Take some time this morning to ask the Lord to “govern” ….to exercise complete sovereignty over, to exert a determining and guiding influence over…your life and mind. Pray that the Spirit would “set your mind” on what the Spirit desires. Pray that the body at NewLife would be marked by lives, hearts, and minds governed by life and peace.
