Day Twenty
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my fathers
house are many rooms; if it were not so I would have told you. I am going away to
prepare a place for you. If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come again
and take you to myself, so that where I am you may be also. You know the way to
where I am going. ‘Lord’, Thomas said, ‘we don’t know where you’re going. How can
we know the way.’ Jesus told him, I am the way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes
to the father except through me.” John 14:1-7

When my children were very small their Birthday and Christmas presents were big.
Ever try to wrap a Barbie dream house or a Little Tikes basketball goal? But as they got
bigger the packages got smaller. Phones, games, jewelry, DVDs, and CDs (remember
those??) were what they wanted; easier to wrap but not nearly the impact perched on
the gift table of their parties.
The confusion and troubles the disciples were facing prior to chapter 14 were big.
Rejected, persecuted, and knowing Jesus to be the long awaited conquering King, Jesus
straps on a towel and washes their feet like a lowly servant. One of their own betrays
their beloved (Judas), and on the heels of this betrayal, Jesus predicts denial and
betrayal from another (Peter). On the heels of all these events, He lets them know he is
leaving them!
I cannot say that if you come to Jesus, you will never have heartache or storms. But life
with Jesus says you have access to a tiny word that means EVERYTHING! And that
tiny word is HOPE! This is what Jesus gives to the disciples, Hope. Some of you have
experienced pain that seems so dark and painful that hope seems impossible. But we
serve the God of the impossible! And right here he is giving his disciples what they
needed most…hope; Hope that He has a purpose and plan; Hope that he goes before us;
Hope that He has a place and that He IS the way to that place…. the place called Hope.
We have Hope that He can redeem the mistakes of our past, the selfishness I’ll
experience today, and my fear over what tomorrow may look like. He’s going before us
all the way to the end! So today, we can tell our hearts not to be troubled, because we
have HIM and because we have HIM, we have hope! Hope…. it’s a small word holding
BIG promises because of Jesus!!
