Day Seventeen

“Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled. where there is knowledge, it will pass away.”

1 Corinthians 13:8

Paul describes the greatness of God’s love. It is the “more excellent way” better than all the wonderful gifts which the Holy Spirit distributed among the believers of the early church. These gifts, as wonderful as they are, will not last forever…but God’s love will. The desire for the gifts of prophecy, tongues, and knowledge is good, but they are not the highest pursuit of the believer’s life. Our greatest pursuit is to love God and love others. Jesus said, “You shall love the Lord your God will all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” God’s love is the greatest! Loving God is the first and greatest commandment, and loving other people is second to it. Everything else is pushed to the background. The highest pursuit is to glorify God by loving Him with all your heart, mind, and soul—and then to pour the love of God into others. These gifts give only partial understanding, but someone is coming that will bring complete understanding. His name is Jesus. He will come with healing in His wings. He will bring a complete understanding of these spiritual gifts. Timothy Keller writes, “To be loved but not known is comforting but superficial. To be known and not loved is our greatest fear. But to be fully known and truly loved is, well, a lot like being loved by God. It is what we need more than anything.” Pursue the heart of love today! Pray for God’s love to shape your heart today. Pray for God’s love to direct your life today. Pray for God’s love to be in the center of your relationships today. God’s love is the greatest!
