“Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. And yet I will show you the most excellent way.”1 Corinthians 12:31
As we begin our 21 Days of Prayer, I want more from God, not less. I want more for you, not less. My desire for our season of prayer at NewLife is more of God and less of me. Paul writes to the Corinthians, that he wanted more for them, not less. He desired the greater gifts. What are the greater gifts? We are to desire, earnestly, the best gifts. We are to keep on desiring the better gifts and zealously cultivate the greatest and best spiritual gifts and graces – not for our own well-being, but for the collective benefit of the whole gathering. The greater gifts are to build up the gathering. Paul is giving a corporal command, not an individual demand. Sadly, many followers of Jesus seek gifts for their own gratification. Paul desires greater gifts to show the most excellent way. The way of love is the path for the greater gifts. Paul is introducing the fruit of the Spirit.
Now, there is a big difference between the gifts of the Spirit and the fruit of the Spirit. The fruit is what God is after. That is the character of Christ coming through. The gifts are given to enable us to exercise the fruit of the Spirit. But the fruit is what God is after in our lives. God wants more fruit in you, not less. The Psalmist said, “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.” I’m praying for you this morning as you prepare your heart for worship. Pray for our worship team. Pray for God’s presence to be exalted in our worship at NewLife. Pray for more of God, not less.
