“But Jonah got up and went in the opposite direction to get away from the Lord. He went down to the port of Joppa, where he found a ship leaving for Tarshish. He bought a ticket and went on board, hoping to escape from the Lord by sailing to Tarshish. But the Lord hurled a powerfulwind over the sea, causing a violent storm that threatened to break the ship apart. 5 Fearing for their lives, the desperate sailors shouted to their gods for help and threw the cargo overboard to lighten the ship.” Jonah 1:3-4
Wouldn’t you think this would be the greatest thing that could ever happen to you or anyone else? Being asked by the Lord to go on an awesome mission involving the possibility of an entire heathen city repenting of their sins. Three Lutheran ministers were invited to attend a special ecumenical service at a neighboring Catholic church. The ministers arrived a few minutes late and discovered all of the seats were taken. The priest noticed his friends standing in the back so he whispered to the altar boy, “Please get three chairs for our Lutheran brethren.” The boy couldn’t hear these instructions so the priest spoke a little louder and motioned to the three ministers standing in the back. He said, “Three chairs for the Lutheran.” The boy thought it strange but he went ahead and followed the priest’s instructions. He stepped up to the altar and yelled, “Three cheers for the Lutherans!”
Jonah was a prophet of the most-high God. It was his job to listen to the Word of God and then communicate it to the people. It’s by God’s word through Jonah that Jeroboam II extended the boundaries of Israel in 2 Kings 14:25. Much of what he would communicate would be drawing people back into right relationship with their God. He would have called people to obedience to their God. What is God’s call on your life right now—to give your life to him? To step out in faith? To stop a certain behavior? When God speaks to you, He expects you to listen. When God gives you a command, He expects you to follow. Take time this morning to listen to the voice of God speaking through His Word for you today. Pray for revival in our community. Pray for NewLife Gathering to listen and respond to God’s voice.
