“Then the Lord told Abram, ‘Leave your country, your relatives, and your father’s house, and go to the land that I will show you. I will cause you to become the father of a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and I will make you a blessing to others. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you. All the families of the earth will be blessed through you.’ So Abram departed…” Genesis 12:1-4
We are creatures of habit. We go to the same restaurants and order the same items off an extensive menu. My husband and I actually go to a restaurant so often that the waitress asks where we were when we miss a Friday night, and even gives us a Christmas gift every year!
When we go to a new place and can choose a seat…we tend to chose something close to where we sat the last time (ok….think about where you sit on Sundays!) We have favorite foods that consistently sit on our shelves or in our freezers (ie. Mayfields peppermint ice cream!). We like familiarity. We like the comfort of knowing what to expect. I like my comfy slippers, my favorite cup of coffee and my comfy sofa. Stepping out and away from the familiar can be tough. It can be scary.
In this twelfth chapter in Genesis we see the Lord telling Abram that he had some pretty exciting things in store for his life, but in order to bring these promises to fruition; Abram was going to have to GO. That meant Abram was going to have to leave all he’s ever known…the familiar and the comfortable because He had places for him to go and things for him to do that were bigger than he could imagine. God’s words tells us that He has plans for your life. He wants to show you His Glory. He has things in mind for you that bigger than you can ask or imagine. But you must be willing to leave, and You must be willing to Go.
And please note…God’s plan for Abram wasn’t just about Abram! If you’ll look back you’ll see in verse 2 we see God telling Abram, “I will make you a blessing to others”. Is there a place physically, emotionally, spiritually God may be asking you to leave….and a place physically, emotionally and spiritually God may be asking you to go? Ask God to make you willing and brave….Ask Him to show you the places in your life that are keeping you tangled and unable to Go! Ask Him to help you let go of those things and to GO! “ But scripture teaches me that thy active will reveals a steadfast purpose on my behalf, and this quietness my soul, and makes me love thee.” Valley of Vision
